The fire crackled when John threw in the damp stick. I thought I heard a snake hiss but it was my imagination. The chilling breeze toyed with the hems of my skirt while he fumbled with some clothes behind me.
“I think this should be a great spot to spend the night.”
“We can't spend the night here. If we stay the night without informing anyone, my family would think I eloped.”
“Flora, you never wanted to marry him-”
“Regardless, I don't want to wed you.”
He lowered his face and his lips brushed mine tentatively while the night giggled.
