BLINDFOLD

A snippet of an emotion.

The sky surrounded by clouds shielded the setting sun from the quiet courtyard. Birds whistled sorrowfully, tree branches swayed tenderly.

The gray prison walls stood high like mountains overlooking the prisoners with barbed-wire fences.

A warden dressed in his navy and black uniform walked past a set of guards to an isolated section fenced off like a cage. He walked into the shaded part of the prison pavements and stopped in front of a dark dingy cell.

A man in his thirties sat with his back to the dark cold wall while his gaunt body sat cross-legged overlooking the setting sun. He was teary-eyed with chains cuffing his bony wrists.

The warden who was holding a collection of keys opened the lock, the prison doors flew open. The teary-eyed man looked from the tiny peephole for a window to the warden whose face was expressionless. The gaunt man fumbled in his attempt to stand. The warden rushed to his side and helped him stand upright. The gaunt man walked slowly as he was led out of the prison by the warden.

They walked past another section housing inmates. Sad faces peered through peepholes of each holding cell. Some people spat out at the wobbly man while a few said a prayer. A tear rolled down his sunken face when he stood -tied with a rope- on a cemented metal drum. His eyes were blindfolded and his skinny body was pressed against the metal. Soldiers positioned on one knee with outstretched guns pointing at him readied themselves.

The commander took one last glance at the offender and nodded his head to confirm the kill.

Ravaging bullets pierced each organ and cartilage of his gaunt frame. Blood oozed from his dark lips and a few tear drops rolled down his cheek. He saw his mother walk up to him and take his large hands in her petite hands. He looked back but a blindfolded stranger stared back at him.
